When Tom Brady retired, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ backs were up against the wall.
They were unsure of their long-term plans at quarterback, causing potential rifts within the front office.
Moving on from a future Hall of Fame quarterback is not an easy task, but it is one that this team was faced with.
They headed into the 2023 season with Baker Mayfield under center, and while they had some ups and downs, the Buccaneers ended up making the playoffs.
This was a redemption year for Mayfield, the former No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft for the Cleveland Browns, who hadn’t lived up to the massive expectations placed upon him.
He certainly delivered in 2023, which caused the Buccaneers to reward his improved play.
The Buccaneers signed him to a three-year contract extension worth at least $100, tying him to the team for the foreseeable future.
The general public received this extension well, including Mayfield’s wife, Emily, who showcased her excitement in her Instagram story, reacting to the news with many heart emojis.
Mayfield hasn’t necessarily been well-liked in every destination of his journey, but it seems that most NFL fans are starting to rally around him.
The Buccaneers now have their quarterback, and with the news of them re-signing Mike Evans, their offense is on the right track heading into 2024.
They might have some work to do throughout the rest of the offseason, trying to fill other holes as they see fit, but they have answered their biggest question, giving the front office a giant sigh of relief.
