After former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield flamed out with the Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers, the future looked bleak for the former Heisman Trophy winner, as teams around the league didn’t seem willing to give him another starting job in the NFL.
However, Mayfield did get a second chance with the Los Angeles Rams, with veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford going down and the team simply needing a formidable quarterback to lead them to the end of the 2022 campaign.
Although no one expected much from Mayfield in Los Angeles, he played better than expected in his short time with the Rams and made enough of an impression to get another shot at being a starting quarterback in the league.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers needed to replace superstar Tom Brady ahead of the 2023 NFL season, and the options were slim, making Mayifled a viable candidate to be the successor for arguably the greatest quarterback of all time.
After taking the job in Tampa Bay, Mayfield was able to resurrect his career and lead the team into the NFL playoffs, winning against the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round of the postseason.
Now, Mayfield is somewhat of a hot commodity in the NFL as a free agent, with the expectation being that he’ll re-sign with the Buccaneers on a long-term deal, but in the meantime, he’s taking some swings at batting practice with the New York Yankees via Bryan Hoch of MLB.

At this point, it seems like it will be only a matter of time before Tampa Bay comes to terms with Mayfield on a long-term deal, especially after the team recently re-signed veteran wide receiver Mike Evans.
It’ll be interesting to see what kind of commitment Mayfield gets from the Buccaneers or he decides to take his talents elsewhere in NFL free agency.
