After flaming out with the Cleveland Browns, resulting in getting traded to the Carolina Panthers and failing to move the needle for that team, former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield was given another chance to show what he could do with the Los Angeles Rams filling in the for the injured Matthew Stafford.
Fortunately for Mayfield, he was impressive during his short stint with the Rams, which resulted in him being an attractive option for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to replace superstar Tom Brady, who chose to retire before the 2023 NFL season.
Obviously, there’s no one that can fill in for Brady as there was going to be a considerable drop off in talent with whomever they brought in to replace the seven-time Super Bowl champion, but Mayfield did much better than expected.
With Mayfield leading the Buccaneers to a playoff win over the Philadelphia Eagles, the veteran quarterback was primed for a payday, and he got it once free agency got underway, which led former NFL star LeSean McCoy to say he’s the biggest winner in free agency via Speak On FS1.
“He ain’t have no ski mask,” McCoy said. “He ain’t have no weapons. He just came in there like, give me my money, and they paid the dude!”

It remains to be seen whether Mayfield will be worth what the Buccaneers will be paying him moving forward, but he definitely exceeded expectations and proved that the team made the right decision in bringing him in to replace Brady.
Only time will tell how the Mayfield experiment pans out in Tampa Bay.
