Even though his team is out of the playoffs, Kyrie Irving of the Brooklyn Nets is still in the news often.
Irving has been earning headlines for almost a year now, ever since he first shook up the NBA by announcing that he wouldn’t be getting the COVID vaccine.
That move created controversy, strong opinions, and more than a few headaches for his Nets.
And now Irving’s business off of the court is getting even more press.

It is being reported that Nike is unlikely to extend a shoe deal with Irving past the 2022-23 season.
Although Nike isn’t giving comment on the deal – or lack thereof – some are speculating that Irving’s opinions and controversies have thrown a monkey wrench in their relationship.
Shoe Gazing
Irving’s line of shoes has been popular and successful for Nike so it’s a bit surprising to see the deal come to an end.
Again, no official statement has been released by Nike but no one would blame fans for assuming Nike pulled the plug due to all the hubbub around Irving and his actions over the last year.
The COVID vaccine debacle left a bad taste in many peoples’ mouths and there is a strong chance that Nike didn’t want to be associated with that.
On the other hand, the decision could be solely a business one and might have nothing to do with Irving’s stance on the vaccine.
As for Irving, there is little doubt that he will be able to find a new shoe deal with a different company.
He’s still one of the most talented players in the league and has a sizable fanbase.
They’ll definitely follow him to Adidas, New Balance, or another organization.
