On Sunday, the Jacksonville Jaguars made some headlines when they reportedly agreed to a restructured contract with All-Pro offensive guard Brandon Scherff that will keep the veteran blocker on their roster for at least one more season.
Despite the fact that the Jaguars were able to come to a resolution with Scherff, the team was recently unable to agree to a new contract with another notable player on their roster.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on Sunday, Jacksonville and one of their top special teams performers in 2023, linebacker Caleb Johnson, have failed to agree to a new deal, which means he will become a free agent on Wednesday when the new league year begins.
The #Jaguars couldn't come to terms with LB/special teams ace Caleb Johnson, who is now expected to become a free agent, per source. Johnson would've been restricted; instead he'll hit the open market.

Johnson was claimed by the Jaguars shortly before the start of the 2022 regular season, and in each of the last two years, he has appeared in all 17 of the team’s regular-season games.
Prior to landing with Jacksonville, Johnson spent a year with the Chicago Bears in 2021, where he also excelled as a member of their special teams.
It’s still possible that he could return to the Jaguars this offseason, but now we just know that other teams are going to get an opportunity to sign him this year if they are interested.
No one knows what sort of plans Jacksonville has for their roster during the next few months as they look to figure out a way to get back to the playoffs next season after being left on the outside in 2023.
Will Johnson eventually return to re-sign with the Jaguars, or has his time with the organization officially come to an end?
