Philadelphia Phillies slugger Rhys Hoskins is apparently ticketed for a long-term absence.
During a game against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday, the Phillies first baseman was chasing down a ball when he felt something in his left knee.
He immediately fell down in pain and had to be carted off the field.
The Phillies cannot afford any more injuries: they will be without Bryce Harper, Ranger Suarez, and Andrew Painter to start the season.
You can go ahead and add Hoskins to that list because even if he didn’t suffer a torn ligament (the most likely scenario given how the injury looked), he will be out for a while.
Here is how it happened:
Oh no no no.
Rhys Hoskins appears badly injured after going down while going after a ground ball. EMT’s out. Non-Contact left knee injury.
Awful.

Usually, non-contact injuries don’t carry a good prognosis.
Man this stinks. I've had that non contact knee injury and it sucks.

Let’s all hope for the best and wait the results of the MRI.
Dr. Jesse Morse, who constantly offers his takes about sports injuries, explains he what he sees judging by the play itself.
Rhys Hoskins #Phillies
This is a VERY strange injury.
Routine play, raised his left knee & it appears he immediately feels pain.
Since it was non-contact, we always have to be concerned about ACL, but a bad meniscal tear is possible.
Hope this turns out to be a minor… https://t.co/tGLjjGv3HU

If there is a tear, he will most likely miss the entire season.
That would be a nightmare scenario for the Phillies, as Hoskins is a reliable middle-of-the-order masher who is a sure thing to contribute at least 30 home runs per season.
He was important in the postseason last year, too.
Hoskins has received lots of love and support through social media after his injury.
Thinking of you @rhyshoskins ❤️❤️

He is not a perfect hitter, yet he has earned his place in the Phillies lineup and fans love him.
An extended absence would really hurt this team’s chances of going all the way.
