St. Louis Cardinals legend Matt Holliday was initially set to become the team’s bench coach before suddenly resigning from his post prior to the season.
St. Louis has had an uncharacteristically bad season, owning a 54-68 record through the first 122 games of the season, which is the second-worst mark in the National League.
Holliday played parts of eight seasons in St. Louis, winning a World Series ring in 2011 and only missing the postseason twice.
However, the Cardinals are in unfamiliar territory at this point in the season, with no realistic chance of a postseason berth.
The former slugger and 2011 World Series champion discussed the Cardinals’ struggles this season with insiders Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman.

Holliday discussed the Cardinals’ shortcomings this season and pointed to the bullpen as a reason why they have struggled so badly.
Both Ryan Helsley and Giovanny Gallegos, who were pillars at the back end of the bullpen in 2022, haven’t been as effective.
Holliday also spoke about Nolan Arenado, who he was teammates with in Colorado in 2018.
The former slugger says that Arenado is very clearly not happy about the way things have gone.
Arenado came to St. Louis to win, and the Cardinals haven’t finished under .500 since 2007.
However, Holliday noted that every organization has a down year and it was bound to happen at some point.
He also believes that the Cardinals will bounce back in 2024 and be a clear postseason contender.
The former slugger highlighted the importance of adding starting pitching to bolster their postseason chances next year.
