The future for the Chicago Cubs at first base is looking pretty bright.
MLB is putting together their top 10 first base prospects, and the Cubs have one player making the list.
While the team made moves to add some veterans to their roster at the position, they currently have a young star ready to take over the position.
This star is Matt Mervis, and his 2022 season in the minors has him ranking high on the prospect list.

Everything he did at the plate last season was impressive.
His .309/.379/.605 slash is enough to blow the socks off anyone watching him.
Add in the 36 home runs and 119 RBI from last season and it’s clear he’s a star in the making.
However, his trip to the majors might be put on hold, as the Cubs have signed Eric Hosmer and Trey Mancini.
While Hosmer will be the starting first baseman, Mancini also has experience playing the position.
With both players on the 40-man roster, it delays Mervis’ call to the big leagues.
But MLB is projecting him to get a call-up in 2023, despite the Cubs having two players for his position.
The projection comes from Mancini being a DH for the team.
While he isn’t part of the defensive alignment, he can sub for Hosmer when needed.
However, it’s likely the Cubs will favor the young stud over Mancini if Hosmer needs time off.
While the Cubs have their guys set before the season begins, they also know they have their future at first base in Mervis.
