The St. Louis Cardinals figure to be a team that is prepared to have a busy offseason.
The team won 93 games during the regular season and captured their first NL Central title since 2019.
However, this does not mean that there aren’t holes to fill.
The departures of Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina have left them in need of a middle-of-the-order bat and a new catcher.
Could that bat come from the shortstop market?
Possibly.
But John Mozeliak has said that Tommy Edman has the job down cold for 2023.
On Twitter, a Cardinals fan expressed frustration with Mozeliak for his claim and stated that with a slew of top-level shortstops available, St. Louis should act.
The ‘don’t sign Trea Turner or Xander Bogaerts because you’ll be blocking a prospect’ argument is no longer valid.
Go get proven talent. #STLCards

Cardinals Fan Demands A Shortstop
Cardinals fans won’t want to hear it, but it is highly unlikely that the team will pursue a shortstop.
While yes, one of the premier shortstops available would give them an offensive boost and the option to potentially move Edman or Rookie of the Year candidate Brendan Donovan to the outfield, it’s more likely that the team pursues somebody in the outfield or designated hitter markets, somebody like Joc Pederson or Andrew Benintendi.
Other options include J.D. Martinez, Trey Mancini, and Brandon Drury.
The Cardinals do need a bat to fill the void left by Pujols’ departure, but it’s highly unlikely that they’ll find it in the shortstop market, especially with Masyn Winn knocking at the door in the minor leagues.
Free agency kicks off tonight at 5 p.m. Eastern Time.
