The St. Louis Cardinals likely will not be diving into the market for free agent shortstops this offseason.
But when you have Tommy Edman manning the position and top prospect Masyn Winn waiting in the wings, there really isn’t any need to go looking for a new shortstop.
Winn, who was selected to the Futures Game back in July along with Jordan Walker, has turned some heads with his power arm.
The Arizona Fall League is currently taking place and Winn is taking part in it along with several Cardinals prospects, including catcher Pedro Pages.
Once again, Winn is making his presence felt with some extremely hard and fast throws across the diamond.

Winn’s Rocket Arm
If the Cardinals haven’t ever thought about turning Winn into a pitcher, now might be a good time to consider that given his power arm.
But when a shortstop can throw that hard, any runner, no matter how fast, is doomed if a ball is hit on the ground in Winn’s direction.
The moral of the story?
If you hit in on the ground, make sure it isn’t headed in Winn’s direction.
With him waiting in the wings, it should come as no surprise that the Cardinals are hesitant to dive into the shortstop market this offseason.
Like Walker, there is little more Winn can do down in the minors, and he should soon have an opportunity to compete for a spot on the big-league roster.
Perhaps in spring training he’ll get his chance.
