The Miami Marlins finished the 2022 season with a mediocre 69-93 record.
Their offense looked overmatched at times, as they just didn’t have the talent to consistently score runs.
Their pitching, however, is very good, and it could get even better in the future as pitchers like Edward Cabrera, Max Meyer, Eury Perez, Pablo Lopez, Sandy Alcantara, and Trevor Rogers mature.
A lot of their recent pitching success can, and should be attributed to pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr.
As the Marlins put together their new coaching staff headlined by new manager Skip Schumaker, they are making sure Stottlemyre returns for the 2023 season and beyond.
The Right Move
That’s the right move for the up-and-coming franchise.
“As I just mentioned on @sportsgrid Mel Stottlemyre Jr is BACK as Pitching Coach of the Marlins agreeing to a multi-year deal with the club. My understanding is he is now among the highest paid pitching coaches in MLB per sources,” Marlins insider Craig Mish tweeted.

The son of late pitcher and pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre, Stottlemyre Jr. has been on the Marlins since 2019.
Before that, he had stints as a coach with the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Seattle Mariners.
Prior to that, he pursued a career pitching professionally, and he even reached (and briefly played) in the major leagues.
His work as a coach has been much better than what he did as a pitcher, however.
He is credited with the success of many of the Marlins’ young starters, including likely NL Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara.
It’s good to see the Marlins confirming him as a valued member of what the organization is trying to do, with a focus on the present and particularly the future.
