The Blue Jays Made Untouchable History In Boston

Friday’s game between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Boston Red Sox had a few historical achievements by the winning team.

Of course, Toronto beat Boston with a 28-5 score: four touchdowns in an MLB is certainly worth celebrating.

All kidding aside, it was a majestic display by the Jays’ offense, but also an abysmal performance by Boston’s pitching and defense.

History was made on several fronts that night.

“Until last night, these 4 had never all occurred in the same season, let alone by one team in the same game: Score 28 runs on the road, hit an inside-the-park grand slam, team hits for the home run cycle, player with 6+ hits in a 9-inning game,” the Blue Jays’ Twitter handle wrote on Saturday, using data by Stats by STATS.

A Record Night For Toronto

Scoring 28 runs on the road looks more like a whole series output, not a game: it was impressive, but we already know the Jays can score runs in bunches.

However, we saw some rare plays, like an inside-the-park grand slam, this time by reserve outfielder Raimel Tapia.

It came in the third inning against Austin Davis.

Additionally, the Jays hit for the “home run cycle.”

The home run cycle is when a team hits a solo homer, a two-run shot, a three-run blast, and a grand slam, all in the same game.

It is also applied for individual players, but is very, very unusual.

In this particular case, Tapia contributed the grand slam, Teoscar Hernandez hit one with the bases empty, Danny Jansen and Matt Chapman each hit a two-run blast, and Jansen went off with a three-run home run, too.

Oh, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. went 6-for-7: his six hits were perhaps the most impressive feat of the night.

It was quite a game for Toronto.
