With Sean Payton and Frenk Reich not available, the Arizona Cardinals had to get a little more creative in their pursuit of a new Head Coach.
It’s been a while since the team last found success, and Kliff Kingsbury’s tenure was full of shortcomings, so they most definitely want to get it right this time around.
Notably, the Super Bowl festivities forced them to hit ‘pause’ on any new hires, as team owner Michael Bidwill was the de facto host of the event and couldn’t fully commit to the process.
Moreover, the Cardinals targeted Philadelphia Eagles’ assistant Jonathan Gannon, so they had to wait until the big game to make an official move to acquire his services.
Now, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Cardinals are still locked in on the Eagles’ Offensive Coordinator, but they’re also keeping tabs on Cincinnati Bengals’ DC Lou Anarumo, who they already interviewed.
Important and likely last day in the HC coach carousel:
— Shane Steichen’s deal with the #Colts is on track to be finalized.
— The #AZCardinals will make a decision on their next head coach following Jonathan Gannon’s interview Monday. https://t.co/VQfph8u9hf— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) February 14, 2023
Furthermore, the word around the league is that Anarumo would target Kansas City Chiefs’ OC Eric Bieniemy to serve as the Cardinals’ Offensive Coordinator, while Vance Joseph would stay to be their DC.
As for Gannon, there’s still no word on who would be a part of his staff, should he take the job.
Whatever the case, the clock is ticking on the Cardinals.
They’ve been linked to as many as 12 candidates, with most of them already landing jobs somewhere else.
There’s plenty of work to do to straighten the course of this team, so they cannot afford to wait much longer before making a decision.
