Some San Antonio Spurs fans were ready to throw in the towel after watching Victor Wembanyama struggle mightily with his shot in his debut in the NBA Summer League.
He was tangled up in some controversy with Britney Spears and his security guard, and it seemed like all the attention was on him for all the wrong reasons.
Then, he responded by bouncing back with a major performance to turn the narrative around once again, which is why Shams Charania of The Athletic believes he’s got the opportunity to be one of the most impactful players to ever lace them up.
"The first game was tough for Victor Wembanyama..
You saw how dynamic he can be in the second game and he's built to be really great in this league" ~ @ShamsCharania #PMSLive pic.twitter.com/q5E6VyTkJA

Charania praised the fact that he’s been playing non-stop for the past year and that he’s been able to shut down all the pressure that’s been put on him and just stay focused on what’s important.
Wembanyama admitted that he didn’t know what he was doing in his first game in the Summer League, stating that he had barely practiced and was out of rhythm.
He even looked slightly gassed out in the second half of the game, with some raising questions about his conditioning.
But now that he’s also given a glimpse of the elite player he could become given enough time and opportunities, the Spurs should do the right thing by just playing it safe and shutting him down until the preseason.
He needs to rest, restore, and get ready for when it actually counts, especially if he wants to avoid injuries, which are the biggest concerns about him as he enters his rookie campaign.
