The loft interior with aquarium

Tanked is a television show that is no longer airing.

After more than 150 episodes, Tanked was canceled in December 2018.

While the show was on the air, it did some excellent work putting incredible fish tanks in homes and businesses.

Many of these tanks were done for celebrities and athletes who had very large budgets.

Other tanks were not quite as expensive but, instead, were more unique or extreme.

However, there is one thing that most of these tanks had in common through the years, and that is that they were expensive to build.

If you are thinking of putting a Tanked-type of a fish tank in your home, you may want to first consider the costs involved in this process.

We have all details on what a fish tank on Tanked costs and whether or not this is something you would want to put in at your own home.

How Much Are Fish Tanks On Tanked?

Family room with large fish tank

Some of the smaller designs on Tanked cost around $6,000 to 10,000, while the larger ones could cost closer to $1 million.

The show was a bit extreme with some of the fish choices and the locations for the fish tanks.

This certainly increased the overall costs that were associated with these tanks.

People like to see large fish and lots of different colors in their fish tanks, but designing a fish tank is a lot more work than you may think.

There are many parts to this process, and because of that, the fish tanks tend to cost a lot of money.

If you are not experienced with fish tanks and the procedures to put one together and to keep it all working and the fish healthy, it is smart to do some research and investigating before you invest.

The thing to remember here is that you are not just doing this as a hobby or for fun.

There will be living creatures inside of the tank that need to be adequately nourished and cared for.

Does Tanked Still Make Tanks?

thinking woman

Those who enjoyed fishkeeping and were interested in the unique features that Tanked was putting into homes enjoyed the Tanked show.

However, after 15 seasons on the air, the show was canceled back in 2018.

The reason for canceling a show like this typically has to do with user interest fading over time.

In addition, there could have been issues with scheduling and building of the tanks to this grand scale.

Sometimes after a while, an idea is just no longer as exciting or unique.

However, Tanked fans are lucky to have more than 150 episodes of the show to look back on and learn from.

That is one of the things that made the show so interesting from the start is that you could learn about different fish species, how they lived together, and what you could do to put together an impressive tank.

Even for those with smaller tanks in their homes, the Tanked show could be education.

Were the Tanked Tanks Good?

The tanks that were featured on the Tanked show were done by a Las Vegas extreme aquarium builder who would travel around to celebrities and high-income people and put these tanks in.

The tanks were known for having rare fish, and some high-end finds that you would likely not see in other locations or areas.

In some instances, things like large sharks and eels were even put in a tank.

There were a few problems through the years for the Tanked show.

First, they had some issues with off-air projects.

When they were in the middle of filming one show, the off-air projects ended up getting pushed to the side.

Some people decided to cancel their projects and contracts with the Tanked builders simply because they were not getting any attention for their project.

When you are investing tens of thousands of dollars or more, it is hard not to get quick service, and the progress of your tank started.

Overall, the tanks that were built on the show had very few complaints.

The only issue that some people ran into was that some of the fish would get too big and eventually have to be moved from the tank.

Many amateur fish keepers do not understand how much work it is to care for a tank.

The time and effort necessary to keep the fish alive, the tank clean, and the entire population working and thriving is quite a bit of work.

There is a certain level of knowledge that tank owners need to have.

If you are not able to understand the way that the fish work, how they feed, how the food chain within the tank works, etc., you won’t be able to own one of these large and extreme tanks.

In the end, it was not any issues with the quality or the design of the tanks that took the Tanked show off the air, but it was simply time to move on to other Animal Planet shows.

In addition, there are only a certain number of people who are going to want a large tank like this in their home.

In addition to the expense, it takes up quite a bit of space and time.

Why Are Large Fish Tanks So Expensive?

Family observing fish at the aquarium

One of the common themes from the Tanked show was that each of the fish tanks was quite large.

These large tanks are partly what causes the increase in the cost, but there are other reasons fish tanks are so expensive.

If you have ever been curious about what it is that accounts for all the funds associated with fish tanks, here are a few of the things that could be behind the high costs.

1. Glass Used For Tanks

Happy family looking at fish tank

The glass used in a fish tank will have to be able to hold quite a high volume of water.

This means that the glass must be strong and capable as well as have a clear view for people to see inside the tank.

The type of glass used in the tank is not cheap, and many times, it must be custom manufactured to work for the individual fish tank.

The glass in a high-quality fish tank must also be strong enough if there are aggressive and large fish swimming in it.

This can cause issues with the fish bumping into the glass or trying to break through it.

It makes the most sense to go with a high-quality tank if you are going to be putting a variety of expensive and high-end fish into the tank.

As you can see, this high-priced glass is not going to help you save any money on large fish tanks.

2. Weight Of The Tank

A fish tank is quite heavy.

This is going to affect the areas where you can keep the fish tank but also the transportation of the fish tank.

If you want to have your tank brought to your home and delivered and set up, it is likely going to cost you quite a bit of money.

Between the weight of the tank and the fact that these are so fragile, the overall costs tend to increase even more.

A heavy tank has a higher freight charge, and there are also issues with engineering that must be worked out to ensure that the support under the tank can hold everything up.

Remember that the tank is going to be considerably heavier when the water and the fish are added to it.

3. Running Costs

cost bill

Fish tanks have filters that are continually running.

In addition, there are also lights that are going to help keep the fish tank bright during certain times.

Depending on the size and the complexity of the tank, the running costs can get relatively high.

If you think about your swimming pool and how much it costs to keep the water clear, you could have similar operating costs on a large fish tank.

Although the products for fish tanks seem to be getting more energy-efficient, there are still running costs involved, especially with the bigger tanks.

The fish in the tank rely on the filter to survive, and it is essential that you can afford the running costs of the tank before you get involved in this process.

4. Cost Of The Fish

Aquarium

When filling a large fish tank with fish, you must consider the cost of the fish that you are putting in the tank.

Remember, this is much more complicated than a few goldfish in a bowl.

You will have to figure out which fish can live together and how many of each fish you can have, but you will also need to analyze which fish you like.

If you are spending all this money on a fish tank, it pays to choose some fish that you enjoy looking at and monitoring.

The larger the fish are, and the rarer the species, the more money that you are going to have to pay for them.

Overall, the cost of the fish in the tank is a large portion of the cost to set this up.

In addition, there are times when you are going to need to supplement the fish population from time to time.

The more you get into this, the more you will realize that having a large fish tank is an expensive hobby to take on.

5. Food For Fish

Fish flake food

The finned friends you have living in your tank are going to need to eat.

For those who purchase and install large fish tanks, it is important to consider how much the food costs are going to be for the tank.

The more fish you have, the more hungry mouths there are to feed.

Some of the fish food used is rather basic, but other fish will require more expensive meals.

If a fish is rare and its diet is unique, you could spend hundreds of dollars a month on the food for the fish in your tank.

When deciding which fish to put in a tank, make sure you consider the diets and choose something that has an affordable diet or meal plan.

The last thing you need is a tank full of fish that require more expensive food than you do!

6. Health Of Fish

Yellow tang (Zebrasoma flavescens) is a saltwater fish

If you thought it was expensive when your dog or cat had an issue, there are going to be times when the fish have issues that need medical attention as well.

The health of the fish in your tank can make or break the entire tank.

You can spend thousands of dollars on a tank but then find that the fish have a disease or a fungus.

These issues need to be treated very quickly, or the fish population will continue to deplete, and at some point, you could lose your entire tank full of fish.

The more you know about aquariums and keeping up with them, the easier it is going to be to keep the fish in great health.

However, if you are not all that aware of the issues that can come up with the health of the fish, you may not notice a problem before it is too late.

Many large fish tank owners will have experts come in from time to time to ensure that the fish and the tanks are looking as they should.

Maintaining the fish tank and the health of the fish is the most important part of owning a tank, but it is also going to be quite a bit more expensive than you may think.

Who Are The Creators Of Tanked?

middle aged bald man looking up and thinking

The creators of Tanked are Brett Raymer and Wade King.

The two men are brothers-in-law who own a Las Vegas business called Acrylic Tank Manufacturing.

The business is designed to install high-end fish tanks in the homes of celebrities, sports stars, and those with lots of discretionary income.

Acrylic Tank Manufacturing is a family business, and the idea for the Tanked TV show originally came up in 2011.

The show then aired a particular version of Tanked called Tanked Unfiltered.

The Tanked Unfiltered show let people see the behind-the-scenes commentary that was going on.

This is one of the things that made the show get so popular because people liked the behind-the-scenes commentary that they could see and enjoy.

The network Animal Planet eventually decided to cancel the show, but for many years, the creators saw a huge increase in their business because of the show and the popularity of the fish tanks they were putting in all over the country.

Conclusion

Fish tanks like the ones featured on Tanked are typically going to be tens of thousands of dollars.

Although there were episodes of Tanked here, the pricing was into the hundreds of thousands, but overall, you can expect to pay $20,000 or more for a large tank with expensive and high-end fish.

It does not matter if you are new to fish keeping or have been in it a long time.

This is quite a bit of money to spend.

Those who get involved in fish keeping have to be very sure that they enjoy all that comes along with it.
