On Thursday, the sports world learned of some sad news.
Tim McCarver, a 21-year MLB veteran and Hall of Fame broadcaster, passed away at the age of 81.
McCarver played most of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals, but became a broadcaster after his playing days were over.
He called various postseason series and World Series games alongside St. Louis native Joe Buck.
After leaving FOX Sports, he joined the Cardinals broadcast team and served as a color analyst from 2014-19.
Needless to say, he had quite an impact on the Cardinals.
On Twitter, former utility infielder and 2011 World Series champion Daniel Descalso commented on the Hall of Fame broadcaster’s passing and recalled a fond memory of him.
Tim McCarver mispronounced my last name a couple times and I told him my grandmother wasn’t happy with him. He asked for her number, called her to apologize and had a nice conversation with her. She got a kick out of it and he always asked me about her after that. RIP Tim

According to Descalso, McCarver mispronounced his last name several times.
Descalso then told McCarver that his grandmother didn’t appreciate it too much.
Fortunately, McCarver was nice enough to reach out to Descalso’s grandmother and apologize for the mispronunciation, which resulted in a very friendly conversation.
From there, a relationship blossomed.
Following the call, McCarver would consistently ask Descalso how his grandmother was doing.
Beyond being one of the best players to ever wear the Birds on the Bat and a legendary broadcaster, McCarver was truly a good man who cared about the people around him and always enjoyed getting to know people, with Descalso’s grandmother being a fine example.
He was well loved by so many within the St. Louis community, as well as around the game as a whole, and he will be missed.
