The St. Louis Cardinals thoroughly enjoyed outfielder Lars Nootbaar‘s “grind the pepper” celebration in 2022, which he put on full display every time he or another member of the team reached base.
But celebrations come and go, and there may be a new celebration for the team in 2023.
And so, Jim Hayes of Bally Sports Midwest, the TV home of the Cardinals, decided to improvise a little bit.
Nootbaar’s celebration has spread from St. Louis all the way to Japan thanks to his participation in the World Baseball Classic.
But in case the team decides on a different celebration, Hayes posted a video of himself grating cheese on Twitter.

A “grate the cheese” celebration would certainly be fun, and Nootbaar may decide that he likes what he saw out of Hayes in this video.
It wouldn’t be quite the same as the pepper grinding celebration, but it certainly would be fun to see if the team decides to try something new.
Hayes definitely has the right idea here.
It’s not too much of a departure from the pepper grinder celebration, but it is also a little bit different and could ultimately catch on as the season progresses.
Either way, Nootbaar knows exactly how to keep his teammates and the Cardinals clubhouse loose, even in the biggest of moments.
Hayes, while just a reporter, is well respected by the players and fans and could ultimately help create a new celebration if that is what the Cardinals desire as the 2023 season rolls on.
