The 2023 season has been nothing short of a nightmare for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Picked by most to win a weak NL Central, they have instead fallen to the cellar of the division and own a record of 49-64.
The pitching staff ultimately gave out in April, and the team has been unable to recover.
St. Louis did add some pitching help at the trade deadline, bolstering their farm system.
However, they still have three rotation spots to fill in the offseason, when Adam Wainwright will officially retire.
On Twitter, one fan took note of the fact that the New York Yankees had recently designated right-hander Deivi Garcia for assignment, suggesting he could be somebody the Cardinals take a look at.
Cardinals might as well take a chance on him. He can't be worse than guys like Naile or Verhagen #stlcards https://t.co/ethB9Gu0dZ

While the starting rotation has been a problem for St. Louis, the bullpen hasn’t helped matters.
Garcia can be used as either a starter or a reliever.
The Cardinals traded away Jordan Montgomery and Jack Flaherty at the deadline and also shipped off relievers Jordan Hicks, Chris Stratton, and Genesis Cabrera.
Garcia has been used as a starter and a reliever with the Yankees.
He made his Major League debut in 2020, posting a 4.98 ERA in six starts.
The young right-hander and former top prospect has pitched in only four games since then, with two of them coming this year.
This season, Garcia has posted a 1.59 ERA.
While there is no indication the Cardinals are making an effort to claim him off of waivers from the Yankees, Garcia could help add to the team’s pitching depth and alleviate the stress of needing to acquire three starters in the offseason.
