Midway through the NFL season, former MVP Cam Newton drew a lot of heat for his game-manager comments about Brock Purdy.
While he made it loud and clear that he meant no disrespect by his take, he claimed that Purdy was a game-manager and not a game-changer.
He didn’t think that was bad at all; he just didn’t think of him as a guy who could take over and be his team’s best offensive player.
Fast forward to today, and the Carolina Panthers legend again had something to say about his colleague.
This time, however, he actually praised him.
Talking on his 4th and 1 podcast, he stated that Purdy played well enough to win the Super Bowl and even made some big plays, but his coaches failed him.

He couldn’t understand why the San Francisco 49ers would choose to get the ball first in overtime, and the fact that the players admitted that they didn’t know the rules were different in overtime was simply bad coaching.
He called out Kyle Shanahan, John Lynch, and Steve Wilks for essentially not having their players ready for that moment, and it wasn’t Purdy’s fault.
Purdy was questioned and criticized for most of the campaign, with people doubting his ability to lead the Niners to a championship.
At the end of the day, however, no one can blame him for his team’s shortcomings; he did his job when it mattered the most.
