The Toronto Blue Jays shockingly decided to move on from manager Charlie Montoyo on Wednesday.
He is the third manager to lose his job this season, after the Philadelphia Phillies fired Joe Girardi and the Los Angeles Angels did the same with Joe Maddon.
It’s a surprising decision after the Jays were on the doorstep of the postseason last year and achieved a solid 91-71 record.
However, he led them to a middling 46-42 record, and was 2-8 in the last 10 games.
The organization seemed to think it was time for a change, and they decided to act before it was too late.
After all, the Jays, as of right now, are still occupying a playoff spot.
Montoyo was highly respected around baseball: he was seen as a nice, calm guy.
The Jays, however, seemingly didn’t think he was good enough to lead them to the promised land: the World Series.
Montoyo Is Respected By Fans And Even Media Members
In any case, fans recognize his contributions during the last four years.
He compiled a 236-236 record, partly because the Jays were very bad in 2019 (67-95 record).
But even media members are writing how much they respected the now-former Jays skipper.
“For what it’s worth: in four years of covering Charlie Montoyo, I’ve never known him to be anything but friendly & respectful. For example: his response to the Budzinski family tragedy showed how he truly cares about the people around him. Wish Charlie all the best from here,” Ben Nicholson-Smith, one of the most widely recognized Jays beat writers out there, wrote on Twitter.

Hopefully, Montoyo finds another job that makes him happy and lets him stay involved in baseball.
