The front office of the St. Louis Cardinals may have jumped the gun a little when they stated that the team’s payroll would be increasing in 2023.
By signing Willson Contreras, the payroll did increase, but not by much, and it was a far cry from what fans were led to believe.
Over the weekend at Winter Warmup, President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak continued to stress that the payroll did in fact increase.
But Cardinals fans are having none of it and feel as if they were technically lied to by the front office.
On Twitter, one fan called out the front office for their continued comments about the payroll having indeed increased for 2023.
It went up by 0.11% lol. Now they are going to parade around and say they weren't technically lying. #stlcards https://t.co/NR7X8TyjWm

Once again, fans in St. Louis are left with a bitter taste in their mouths.
While signing Contreras was a big move and one that significantly improves their offense, people around St. Louis were expecting more.
Granted, they weren’t going to outspend teams like the New York Mets, New York Yankees, or Philadelphia Phillies.
Still, fans were hoping for more.
The team is now left with a few holes they have still yet to fill, particularly starting pitching.
A complementary bat would help too.
This doesn’t mean that they’re done of course, but it’s still reason for the fans to be frustrated about things and wishing that more was done in order to improve the team.
Since signing Contreras, the Cards have stood still and watched other teams spend big, proving once again that their “let the market develop” strategy is long outdated and does not work.
