After just a week of regular season play, the New York Yankees had to place reliever Jonathan Loaisiga on the injured list with right elbow inflammation.
An MRI performed shortly after that revealed only swelling and no structural damage.
Later, on May 1, he underwent surgery to remove bone spurs from his right elbow.
He has been on the shelf for most of the season, and won’t be returning anytime soon.
After several weeks with no updates, we finally heard about him again.
The Yankees transferred Loaisiga to the 60-day injured list.
In the grand scheme of things, the move doesn’t really have much meaning for his recovery timeline: he is still expected to return in late August or early September.
From a procedural standpoint, however, it helps the Yankees open up a 40-man roster spot.
Loaisiga, one of the Yankees’ best relievers, had a 2.70 ERA in just 3.1 innings before getting hurt.
“Prior to tonight’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves: •Transferred RHP Jonathan Loáisiga to the 60-day injured list. •Signed RHP Ryan Weber (#62) to a Major League contract and selected him to the active roster,” the team announced via Twitter.

He missed most of the first half of last year with shoulder issues.
This time, it’s his elbow.
He was able to return this season, and the same is expected from him in 2023.
As for his replacement, Weber had a 0.84 ERA in Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre in 10.2 innings.
The Yankees hope he can be respectable out of the bullpen.
They need healthy and effective arms there, and Weber would certainly help.
