Tyrann Mathieu became an official member of the New Orleans Saints after signing a three-year, $33 million contract.
The specifics of the deal haven’t been disclosed, but the transaction itself sent shockwaves within the team’s fanbase.
After all, he is one of their own, having been born and raised in New Orleans.
His football journey brought him from St. Augustine High School to Louisiana State University and the NFL.
Mathieu could have been a hot commodity after the Kansas City Chiefs did not offer him a new contract.
He could have generated visits from several teams because he’s still at the peak of his game.
But for the All-Pro safety, no other decision made sense.

Katherine Terrell of The Athletic shared, “Tyrann Mathieu said the Saints were the only team he visited.”
Mathieu also said when the Saints introduced him to the media, “I think from the get-go, I knew where I wanted to be. From there it was just about everything coming together and aligning.”
Indeed, things fell into place and he will be representing the team he cheered for when he was younger.
Mathieu Is A Fan Of The Saints Defense
Aside from joining his hometown team, Mathieu also marvels at how the defense carry themselves.
In the same introductory press conference, he said, “When I watch this defense, they pop off the screen. Just with energy and passion, and all the different handshakes that they do. It’s fun and it’s exciting.”
Mathieu will be joining a defensive unit that could turn out to be one of the league’s best.
They have Cameron Jordan on the defensive line and Demario Davis at linebacker.
Their secondary also has Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore and up-and-coming safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
Mathieu’s football wisdom, especially in pass coverage, will help New Orleans shut down the opposition.
