There’s no turning back for the San Francisco 49ers after naming Trey Lance as their starting quarterback even if Jimmy Garoppolo is still under contract.
He is the play-caller the team traded up for and it wouldn’t make any sense if they did not give him the keys to the squad.
After his rookie season wherein he played sporadically, he will now lead a squad that made it to last season’s NFC Championship Game.
If he is a better play-caller than Garoppolo, then he should lead the squad to a Super Bowl appearance.
That’s easier said than done because the NFC has a lot of legitimate contenders.
But it is reassuring that he is already developing some chemistry with their top wide receiver.

The Athletic’s David Lombardi shared this video of Lance and Deebo Samuel working together during training camp.
The tandem will be lining up on one side for a while after Samuel agreed to a three-year, $71.5 million contract extension.
That’s why it’s important for both players to understand each other’s tendencies to complete several deep throws like the one above.
It could be a breath of fresh air for Samuel because Garoppolo isn’t known to be a deep passer.
Therefore, he welcomes the development of having Lance behind center.
49ers Think Lance Is Ready
The former North Dakota State standout didn’t have much playing time during his rookie season.
But even then, the 49ers think that he is ready to take on a bigger role.
Lance will now be a target as edge rushers go for him.
That said, he must also be confident in completing plays while he is being hounded by defensive linemen.
If he can find Samuel when he is pressured, the sequence will most likely be successful.
