The San Francisco 49ers might be ready to give up on Trey Lance already.
He’s been unimpressive every single time he’s been given a chance to prove his worth, and he might not even be the second-best quarterback on their roster right now.
Looking back to his struggles in the preseason game vs. the Las Vegas Raiders, the third-year pro claimed that he’s got to execute better and there were some miscommunication issues.
Lance went three and out to start the game, and even though he did manage to score his team’s only touchdown, it was more of a Hail mary-kind of scramble play rather than anything else, not to mention the fact that he was sacked four times.
He’s lost his job to Brock Purdy, who’s drawn very positive reviews throughout the course of training camp, and Sam Darnold has looked much better and more ready than him as well.
At this point, the Niners may have no choice but to consider moving on from him, even if they will never get anything close to the plethora of assets they had to give away to take him in the first place.
Perhaps Lance just needs a change of scenery and a different offensive scheme to be at his best and finally prove his worth in this league.
But as things stand right now, it makes little to no sense to keep him on the roster, even if the Niners want to be cautious given their recent history of injuries at the quarterback position.
