Even though he scored the only touchdown for the San Francisco 49ers and had some good numbers overall, Trey Lance still doesn’t look comfortable out there.
He completed 10 of 15 passes for 112 yards and one score, adding one carry for two yards, but he was sacked four times and looked way over his head at times.
But as bad as he’s been for most of his career, former NFL star Jason McCourty believes he’s not to blame this time.
Per McCourty, Lance is being set up for failure because the Niners are running an offense designed around Brock Purdy and his strengths.
"Brock Purdy is the starting QB for the 49ers. The offense that he will run and be comfortable in is not the same offense that Trey Lance would…
…look at who the backup QB is. Is it Trey Lance if you have to change and alter the entire offense…?"@JasonMcCourty pic.twitter.com/Qm33e8DgPO

He believes that this offense isn’t suited for Lance’s game, so it’s only natural to see him being uncomfortable and out of sorts.
On that same note, McCourty believes the real question now is whether Lance would be better off somewhere else, as having Darnold as a backup makes way more sense for the Niners, given that he can successfully run a similar offense to the one they designed for Purdy.
Of course, the Niners will never get as much as they gave up to land Lance in any trade, but it’s become more than evident now that he’s just not going to get it done in San Francisco.
Even when the offense was designed around him and he was healthy. Lance looked very raw and underprepared, and now with two better options ahead of him in the pecking order, it makes no sense for him to try and force things in the Bay area.
