Trey Lance may not get the opportunity to start at quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers this season, but he was still hard at work this offseason looking to improve his game.
He did some offseason workouts with Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes, and some who saw them said he looked excellent.
Lance talked about how grateful he was to be able to work with and learn from a living legend like Mahomes.
“It’s just awesome being around a guy like that. Obviously he’s doing it at the highest level there is… Just being able to pick his brain about everything.”

Lance was the starter at the beginning of last year, and after showing mixed results, he suffered a severe ankle injury in Week 2, and there went his season.
Jimmy Garoppolo took over under center, and when he went down with his own season-ending injury, rookie Brock Purdy filled in and did extremely well.
Purdy has been penciled in as the starter for 2023, and it appears head coach Kyle Shanahan isn’t making it an open competition for the starting job at quarterback.
Still, Lance has been taking snaps in training camp, and although results have been mixed, he has looked good at times.
Purdy has been recovering from a torn UCL in his throwing elbow he suffered in last season’s NFC Championship Game, and he has been gradually ramping up his activity, which has led some to believe Lance could regain his starting job.
But Lance will likely only be the 49ers’ QB1 if Purdy gets hurt again or if he isn’t ready to start in Week 1 of the regular season on the road versus the Pittsburgh Steelers.
