The Jacksonville Jaguars went to great lengths to acquire Travis Hunter.
New general manager James Gladstone made a huge statement and proved that he wanted to be aggressive right out of the gate by trading up in the 2025 NFL Draft to select the two-way star at No. 2 overall.
On paper, Hunter would fix both of the Jaguars’ most pressing needs, as he can play wide receiver and cornerback.
Quarterback Trevor Lawrence recently gave his new teammate a major endorsement.
“He’s so talented, it’s hard to keep him off the field,” Lawrence said, via NFL Network. “Selfishly, I definitely want him on offense more. And I told him, ‘Do you want to catch touchdowns or do you want to maybe break up a pass or two? That’s a decision you have to make.’ He’ll make plays wherever he is, but obviously as a quarterback I hope he plays more on offense. Wherever he plays to make us better, because he will make us better, I’m all for wherever that is.”
Hunter has made it clear that he intends to play on both sides of the ball.
He’s been emphatic about that, demanding that his name be called as both a wide receiver and a cornerback during the draft, and urging teams not to take him if they didn’t intend to allow him to do so.
Of course, it comes with massive risks.
Not only is he more likely to get injured, but he may not be able to play either position at an elite level unless he does it sparingly.
He’ll be facing the best players on offense and defense, and he may not have enough stamina to keep up with an elite wide receiver for a full game while also being guarded by a standout defensive back.
But if he has to choose one side, he knows how his quarterback feels.
