Shawn Marion was part of the iconic Dallas Mavericks team that won the NBA title in 2011.
Speaking with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, Marion opened up about what that team had that made them so special and competitive.
“We knew what our ultimate goal was,” Marion stated, before adding that the team “always challenged each other” and truly believed in one another and what they were capable of.
Marion said that no team wins a championship because of just one player.
Although Dirk Nowitzki was undoubtedly the biggest name on the roster at the time, there were plenty of supporting stars who were ready to lead the squad.
In the end, it was a team effort, Marion said.
The team had a mix of serious self-belief and a desire to always push and challenge.
They didn’t settle, Marion claims, and that made all the difference.
Perhaps Marion can give some guidance to the current Mavericks roster because they are a far cry from the team that won the championship all those years ago.
They are again led by a legitimate All-Star, Luka Doncic.
But they also have some talented players alongside him.
Still, all the pieces haven’t come together for the Mavs and they are trying to find that winning spirit and self-belief that can get them far into the playoffs again.
One of the men who won the championship alongside Marion, Jason Kidd, is now the head coach of the Mavericks.
Therefore, if anyone is going to be able to get them back into winning form, it should be him.
