Although the biggest NBA story on Thursday night was Game 1 of the Finals, there were also many headlines about Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies as well.
That’s because NBA Commissioner Adam Silver spoke to the press about Morant and touched upon the upcoming punishment for the young player’s off-court actions.
We don’t know the particulars of that punishment but we do know that it will be declared after the Finals and nearly everyone believes it’ll be substantial.
On Friday morning, Shannon Sharpe said he thinks the league will “drop the hammer” on Morant and said the consequences for his actions will be “severe.”
“They’re going to send him a message. Hopefully, he’ll learn his lesson,” Sharpe added.

Following Silver’s comments on Thursday, analysts, writers, and fans unanimously agreed that Morant is about to be served a very lengthy suspension from the league.
There are a number of reasons why he could miss half of the season or more.
This was Morant’s second time showing off a gun on a social media live stream, just weeks after his first offense.
The NBA will certainly remember that when they are punishing him.
Sharpe believes that Morant doesn’t know the gravity of his situation or his actions.
Silver said as much too, mentioning that he wasn’t sure what is necessary to make the young guard change his ways.
He is one of the most promising stars in the league and could be the face of his franchise for years to come.
But it seems likely that Memphis fans won’t see Morant for much of the 2023-24 season.
