The Pittsburgh Steelers may have found their quarterback for the future.
Russell Wilson is no spring chicken, but he has shown that he still has plenty left in the tank.
Of course, bringing him back will not be as simple as it seems, as he will demand a much higher salary next season.
Even so, if it’s up to him, it seems like he wants to run it back with Mike Tomlin.
When asked about his future, the former Super Bowl champion admitted that he loved being in Pittsburgh and hoped to be there for the long run and help them win a ring:
Asked if he’s going to re-sign with the Steelers, Wilson answered, “Hopefully, I love it here. It’s cool. Hopefully we’re going to win a Super Bowl.”
Truth be told, that’s what makes the most sense.
The league seemed ready to move on from him after his failed two-year stint with the Denver Broncos.
Tomlin believed in him in the offseason and doubled down on that belief when he sent him out there to be the starter midway through the season, and it’s only right that he pays the team back.
Whether that means taking a hometown discount to stay there remains to be seen.
However, given how much money Wilson has made throughout his career, how he’s fared with the organization, and how the fan base and coaching staff have embraced him, perhaps money won’t be the deciding factor in his next move.
If he leaves, however, the Steelers will be left scrambling to fill a gap that has been a major issue since Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement.
