For all intents and purposes, the San Francisco 49ers’ season is over after they lost to the Los Angeles Rams in one of the ugliest games the NFL has had this season and fell to 6-8 on the year.
The Niners had trouble moving the chains and converting on third down, and quarterback Brock Purdy was off on a few deep throws that could’ve changed the complexion of the game.
Purdy will be eligible for a contract extension after the season, and though just about everyone expects the Niners to pay him, the question is whether he will get the type of extension Dak Prescott and Joe Burrow recently got, or something less than that.
One former NFL head coach said he’d be concerned about paying Purdy the going rate.
“I’d be a little bit concerned with it. He’s a solid quarterback, he does some really good things. He really is to me, in my estimation, a game manager,” Ron Rivera said on “The Dan Patrick Show.”

Some of Purdy’s numbers are down this season, and perhaps some of that is due to the revolving door San Francisco has had at the skill positions due to a series of injuries.
Ever since he took over the starting spot two years ago, there has been a debate about whether he is merely a game manager or something closer to an elite quarterback.
In last season’s playoffs, he proved that he is perhaps the latter by leading the Niners to come-from-behind wins against the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions on the way to the Super Bowl.
The Niners could be entering a salary cap jam because of Purdy’s possible extension, and they will have to find some creative ways to retain enough of their talented core to remain legitimate title contenders.
