The Washington Commanders successfully retained wide receiver Terry McLaurin with a three-year, $71 million deal.
That contract makes him one of the highest-paid wideouts in the NFL, which he deserves given that he averages 1,030 receiving yards throughout his first three seasons.
If not for his consistent play despite the ever-changing cast of quarterbacks, the Commanders could have been much worse.
However, re-signing McLaurin is just the beginning for the Commanders, as shared by NBC Sports’ JP Finlay.
Ron Rivera reiterated that Washington “isn’t done” getting contract extensions with current players. Says some of those deals might be next offseason but there is a 3-year plan in place. Rivera says getting the McLaurin deal done was a huge step.

With one of their building blocks staying for the long term, it’s time to do the same with other top talents.
Aside from McLaurin, the Commanders have also re-signed wide receivers Cam Sims and J.D. McKissic.
They’ve also brought in Alex Erickson from the Carolina Panthers.
Commanders’ Top Free Agents For 2023 And 2024
Sims will become a free agent once again after the 2022 season.
Also included in the list is Taylor Heinicke, who is one of the eight quarterbacks McLaurin has played with.
Interior defensive lineman Da’Ron Payne and left tackle Wes Schweitzer are some of their other free agents after 2022.
A year later, the Commanders should have a contract in place for cornerbacks William Jackson III and Kendall Fuller.
Chase Young, Curtis Samuel, Andrew Norwell, Montez Sweat, and Antonio Gibson are others who should be kept around.
Keeping those players could help the Commanders remain competitive over a long period.
However, they would have to prepare for lucrative extensions for players like Young and Gibson.
