Something had to change for the New York Jets.
One might argue that Robert Saleh’s firing won’t do a lot to help this team going forward, but it was worse to sit back and rest on their laurels.
Team owner Woody Johnson sent a clear message by parting ways with Saleh five games into the season: This team has everything they need to win, and they must win NOW.
That’s why Saleh may have been the fall guy.
Following his firing, the former defensive coordinator released a statement to thank all the players and members of the Jets organization for the opportunity they gave him three years ago (via Adam Schefter)
“To the Jets Organization, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with so many incredible people. I will always be appreciative of the love and support from everyone at 1 Jets Drive,” Saleh said.

Not many teams turn their season around after firing their coach midway through the season, but this decision may have been the catalyst the Jets needed.
Some thought Saleh had lost his locker room and had been undermined by Aaron Rodgers’ presence.
Even if that wasn’t the case, it’s not easy to turn that narrative around.
The Jets’ defenses were usually outstanding during Saleh’s reign in charge of the team, but their offense left plenty to be desired.
To be fair, he didn’t have a starting-caliber quarterback until Aaron Rodgers showed up, and some people believe Nathaniel Hackett, not Saleh, was the main person to single out about the team’s struggles.
Whatever the case, what’s done is done, and the show must go on in Gotham.
As for Saleh, he should gauge plenty of interest for multiple DC positions in the next hiring cycle.
