Trey Lance has failed to make a good impression in three years with the San Francisco 49ers.
The decision to trade multiple picks to get up in the draft and take him with the No. 3 pick has looked more questionable as the days go by, but a new report sheds more light on what could have happened behind closed doors.
Maybe Lance never got a fair opportunity to prove himself, as NFL insider Greg Bedard just revealed that Kyle Shanahan actually wanted to draft Mac Jones (via NBC Sports Boston).
Do the issues between Trey Lance and the 49ers really tie back to … Mac Jones?@GregABedard @MichaelSHolley @mikefelger pic.twitter.com/O2bQbzih8e

Per Bedard, Shanahan got ‘bullied’ into taking Lance by GM John Lynch and other people inside of the organization, but he was never actually high on him.
Bedard adds that Shanahan just wants someone who does what he says, throws on time, and plays within the system.
But he had no leverage in that decision.
Most of that was due to the fact that people within the organization didn’t want to trade up to get Jones, who eventually fell to the No. 15 spot to the New England Patriots.
Truth be told, Jones has struggled at times with the Patriots, but he has been better than Lance.
Lance has barely played since his days in college, and losing his job to three different quarterbacks in three years doesn’t help his case.
And if coach Shanahan isn’t a fan of him, there’s literally no reason to keep dragging the inevitable, and Lance should pursue a trade away from the Bay area.
