For years, Bill Belichick has shown no love whatsoever for the New York Jets.
He’s repeatedly taken shots at the organization.
He did it as recently as this season, calling them out for their decision to fire HC Robert Saleh.
His feud with the Jets dates all the way back to when he was their head coach.
He resigned before his introductory press conference.
The Jets traded his rights to the New England Patriots, and he wound up tormenting them for two decades.
Even so, in spite of all of that, he still wanted to coach them this season.
According to a report by Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the legendary head coach was looking forward to taking the reins:
“About two weeks ago, the New York Jets were informed (and were stunned to learn) that there was interest in their organization coming from none other than … Bill Belichick. A very small circle of people in the Jets building were made aware of his interest, though I was told no meeting or formal conversation ever happened because the UNC opportunity popped up,” Russini said.
Still, with UNC’s approach and his desire to get back to coaching right away, that just didn’t happen.
Multiple reports state that NFL teams just weren’t very moved by the prospect of hiring Belichick, which is why he ultimately took the position at a lesser college program instead of staying unemployed for the next coaching cycle.
Needless to say, it would’ve been very ironic and strange to watch Belichick there.
Then again, he could’ve also been a logical choice.
They also needed a general manager, and with their talented defense and roster, Belichick’s style may have been just what they needed.
Who knows? Perhaps he can go full circle and do the opposite of what he did to them 24 years ago, leaving UNC shortly after his announcement and signing with the Jets instead.
