Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow just can’t catch a break from injuries.
The right-hander missed most of the 2022 campaign while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery performed in August 2021.
He was limited to just 6.2 innings.
After going through the offseason healthy and getting ready for 2023, he sustained another injury, this time during spring training.
Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times confirmed the official diagnosis.
“Official word from #Rays on Glasnow: MRI showed Grade 2 left oblique strain. His timeline to return to game action is 6-8 weeks,” he tweeted.

Oof.
Here we go again.
Glasnow is, when healthy, a dream pitcher: tall, with extension, a heavy fastball and some impressive breaking stuff.
The problem is that he hasn’t been able to stay in one piece in quite some time.
The last time he pitched at least 100 innings was five years ago, in 2018.
There are some positive takeaways from this development: the issue happened early in spring training, so there is a chance Glasnow returns before the end of April if all goes well.
The Rays are certainly not going to rush him back with his long history in the treatment room, though.
Yonny Chirinos, Josh Fleming, Luis Patiño and Taj Bradley are ready to cover significant innings in his absence.
He shouldn’t be out too long, though, and that’s huge for the Rays’ chances of making the postseason in the tough American League.
When healthy, Glasnow is a bonafide ace, and he will be missed while he is gone.
