Despite winning in Week 15 against a lowly Las Vegas Raiders squad, the Atlanta Falcons still decided to make waves when it was announced they were benching Kirk Cousins in favor of rookie Michael Penix Jr.
Cousins has looked terrible the past month as he’s thrown more interceptions than touchdowns, a harrowing sign for an aging quarterback.
Cousins was given a lucrative four-year deal in the offseason but will now be the backup in Week 16 against the New York Giants.
The move to Penix came earlier than expected, though Atlanta seems well-prepared for Cousins to regress or struggle in his first year back from his Achilles tear.
Unlike Cousins, Penix has a rocket for an arm, and some added mobility to dance around the pocket and extend plays.
Ahead of their matchup against the New York Giants, Cousins reportedly supported Penix throughout the week via Peter Schrager on FOX Sports.
“I heard that Kirk Cousins this week was simply amazing for Penix in that he helped him with the gameplan, was there for every question,” Schrager said.

Schrager noted that while Cousins could have easily pouted or complained about the demotion, he made himself available to Penix and soaked up the game plan.
It’s a classy and veteran move from Cousins, who appears focused on helping the team where he can, though his future with the team will likely end in the offseason.
Still, Atlanta has a chance to make the playoffs, and it’ll be interesting to see if Penix will be the boost they need.
