On Dec. 15 versus the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain, and as a result, many wanted him to sit out last Saturday’s game against the Houston Texans.
His ankle healed enough for him to be declared available to play, and while he didn’t have a Mahomes-type game, he did enough to deliver the Chiefs a 27-19 victory over the Houston Texans and a 14-1 record.
They will have a short turnaround before their Christmas Day game on the road versus the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Mahomes says his ankle is feeling better than it was days ago.
“Obviously the body’s going to be sore just with a short week and everything like that, but I think the ankle should be in a better place. We’ll see in practice [Monday], but as far as how I felt after this game compared to the one before, I’m definitely in a lot better place,” Mahomes said.
On Saturday, Mahomes went 28 of 41 for 260 yards and one passing touchdown while adding a second touchdown on the ground as his team held off the upstart Texans.
His numbers have been down a bit this season, as they also were last season, and he may have no shot at winning a third MVP award this year, but in a vacuum, he remains the best quarterback in the game when the chips are down.
For a second straight season, Kansas City has had to find ways to win games through grit and resourcefulness rather than artistry, but once again, their defense is carrying them through and keeping them at or near the top of the football world.
As a result, they remain one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl championship this season, along with the Buffalo Bills and the Detroit Lions.
