Well before the San Antonio Spurs won the NBA Draft Lottery and chose to select French phenom Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, the 19-year-old was already an established superstar overseas.
Now that Wembanyama is the new face of the Spurs franchise, with legendary head coach Gregg Popovich committed to coaching in San Antonio for another five years, the hype train has begun, as every NBA fan is looking forward to what this kid can do on the next level.
On October 25, Wembanyama will make his NBA debut, going head-to-head with Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks, and the league has already started promoting what will be must-see TV for basketball fans via the league’s Twitter account.
“Perhaps the most advanced draft prospect in the history of professional team sports.”

Kevin Durant was the last player with size who could move, shoot, and dribble like a guard that had the league buzzing, and he didn’t disappoint with an NBA MVP award and two NBA titles to his credit up to this point in his career.
Wembanyama, however, is something we’ve never seen before, as he’s nearly as tall as Yao Ming but can basically do anything that Durant can do on the floor, which is unheard of and unprecedented.
The only question now is whether Wembanyama can live up to the hype, as no player since LeBron James has dealt with this kind of attention coming into the NBA, and few players can thrive when given such high expectations, especially in the social media era where players are criticized on a daily basis.
