French phenom Victor Wembanyama is just a few weeks away from his first game with the San Antonio Spurs, which will be a preseason tilt versus the Oklahoma City Thunder, and he is set to take the NBA by storm.
The 7-foot-4 19-year-old was the No. 1 pick in June’s draft, and many feel he has the potential to become one of the game’s all-time greats thanks to his unique set of skills.
He has lucked out by being drafted by the Spurs, who are coached by Gregg Popovich, the same man who took David Robinson and Tim Duncan to the mountaintop of greatness, and he was seen working out with his new teammates recently.

Wembanyama has the ability to handle the ball, shoot it from distance, and score inside in addition to being an outstanding shot-blocker and a good rebounder, and if he becomes a great outside shooter and improves his low-post game, the sky could be the limit for him.
Many have noted that he does need to add bulk and strength, as he currently weighs just 209 pounds and had trouble holding his position down low during two games in NBA Summer League play in July.
Luckily, he will have the benefit of being mentored by Popovich, who recently got inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and has agreed to a contract extension that will keep him in San Antonio until the 2027-28 season.
It will take a while for the Spurs to build a winning team around Wembanyama, but until then, perhaps he will at least make them competitive again.
