While acquiring Deshaun Watson was the biggest news for the Cleveland Browns this offseason, Myles Garrett continues to be the foundation of the team’s defense.
The former Texas A&M standout had another solid season with 33 solo tackles and 16 sacks in 2021.
He’s had double-digit sacks in each of his last four seasons and has 58.5 in his career.
Garrett continues to be a menace for opposing quarterbacks, and his tenacity won’t change anytime soon.
For that reason, BetOnline.ag had him high on their betting odds for 2022 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, as shared by The Athletic’s Jon Machota.
2022 NFL Defensive Player of the Year favorites via @betonline_ag:
1. Myles Garrett: 13/2
2. TJ Watt: 7/1
3. Aaron Donald: 15/2
4. Micah Parsons: 9/1
5. Nick Bosa: 11/1— Jon Machota (@jonmachota) April 11, 2022
Machota shared that Garrett tops the odds at 13/2, followed by reigning Defensive Player of the Year T.J. Watt at 7/1.
Aaron Donald, a three-time recipient of this award, is third at 15/2, while 2021 Defensive Rookie of the Year Micah Parsons ranks fourth with 9/1 odds.
Nick Bosa rounds up the top five at 11/1.
Why Garrett Will Win The Award
He continues to play at a high pace five years into his career.
While he has missed a bunch of games, his production never wavered.
He had 12 sacks despite playing just 14 games in 2020 and 10 sacks in 10 games the year before.
However, Jadeveon Clowney‘s absence can either be a blessing or a curse for Garrett.
It could be a blessing because his numbers might increase.
On the other hand, not having an equally-talented pass rusher in Clowney will help the offensive line key in on him.
He won’t have someone who will attract attention on the weak side.
Therefore, he might have difficulty penetrating the offensive line because of the double team.
The upgraded offense with Watson, Amari Cooper, Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt, and David Njoku may give the Browns the early advantage..
In that case, opponents might abandon the run to catch up quickly.
Garrett will have more time and opportunities to sack the quarterback with more pass plays.
