On Monday, as many people expected for months, Mike McCarthy was out as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
His contract expired and neither side could come to an agreement on a new one, and both sides ended up mutually parting ways according to reports.
Michael Irvin, the legendary Cowboys wide receiver from their dynasty years in the 1990s, said on Fox Sports 1’s “Speak” that he supports the decision to move on from McCarthy and that his old team needs a coach who will be “monomaniacal about winning games.”

McCarthy, who has been coaching in one capacity or another in the NFL for almost all of the last 30 years, took over the Cowboys in 2020 and inherited a talented team that had quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and cornerback Trevon Diggs.
In the following years, they added more stars such as Micah Parsons and DaRon Bland, but during his time with them, McCarthy won a grand total of one playoff game.
This is a franchise that proudly possesses five Vince Lombardi Trophies, but it hasn’t been to the Super Bowl or even the NFC Championship Game since the 1995 season, and its fan base is beyond frustrated about its lack of success.
Dallas has a very top-heavy roster and little or no salary cap flexibility, and thus they have a tall task this season as far as augmenting their roster and getting back to the playoffs.
This season, they went just 7-10 and failed to qualify for the postseason.
