On this day in 2018, the New York Mets made a franchise-altering trade with the Seattle Mariners.
In that deal, they acquired closer Edwin Diaz and veteran slugger Robinson Cano.
In exchange, the Mariners received Jay Bruce, Anthony Swarzak, Jarred Kelenic, and Gerson Bautista.
While Cano never panned out for the Mets, Diaz his proven to be everything they could have ever hoped for.
His first season with the Mets was quite forgettable, as he went 2-7 with a 5.59 ERA.
Despite saving 26 games, he blew seven of his opportunities.
The veteran right-hander bounced back, however.
This season, he posted a 1.31 ERA and saved 32 games.
He has also posted an fWAR of 5.9 since the trade.

A Trade That Changed The Mets
Meanwhile, the four players that the Mariners got in return did not perform well.
Bruce is now retired, but he posted just a 0.4 fWAR.
Swarzak, Kelenic, and Bautista posted fWAR’s of -0.8, -0.6, and -0.2, respectively.
In short, the deal worked out quite well for the Mets, while the Mariners got the short end of the stick.
Diaz, 28, also has earned himself an insanely cool entrance song, that being “Narco” by Blasterjaxx, which features an epic trumpet solo from the one and only Timmy Trumpet.
The right-handed fireballer recently re-signed with the Mets on a five-year deal and made a cool announcement on Twitter, that the trumpets would be returning to New York and staying there for the foreseeable future.
Four years ago today, the Mets began their quest of building a contending ballclub.
Now, they have emerged as a powerhouse in the National League.
