The New York Mets wanted to build a super rotation this year, so they had to get to work during the last offseason.
They already had Jacob deGrom and young starters Tylor Megill and David Peterson, plus veterans Taijuan Walker and Carlos Carrasco.
But they felt they needed to make a statement signing.
That’s why they handed Max Scherzer $130 million over three years to be their “1B” to deGrom’s “1A”.
You can rank them however you want, really: they are both accomplished aces with nothing to prove.
Scherzer’s first season in Queens was a success, overall: he had a brilliant 2.29 ERA in 145.1 frames, striking out an incredible 173 hitters.
Scherzer Loved His First Season With The Mets
Unfortunately, two separate injured list stints with oblique issues derailed the end of the season for him, as he was not the same in two crucial starts in the stretch run and the playoffs.
The Mets’ collective goal may have not been met, but Scherzer impressed overall.
If you ask him how his year went and how he feels toward the Mets, he was also impressed with what he saw.
“Max on NY/the Mets: ‘I got there and fell in love immediately … I fell in love with the team … really good dudes and we had a really good clubhouse. I don’t feel like we had any bad eggs.’ 30 minutes with Max now on the @YESNetwork app,” Jon Heyman tweeted, quoting the All-Star pitcher.

If you were wondering if Scherzer had a good time in his first season in New York, there is your answer.
He will try to come back even stronger next season, and hopefully injuries don’t get in the way.
Even at 38, Scherzer remains extremely dominant.
