The first few games featuring both Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic playing together for the Dallas Mavericks weren’t as incredible as fans had hoped.
Even though both players were performing very well individually, they weren’t coming together to earn wins for their squad.
But the duo didn’t just secure a victory on Thursday night, they also secured a place in Mavericks history.

Doncic earned 42 points, 4 rebounds, 12 assists, and 7 three-pointers while Irving was wonderful with his 40 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and 6 three-pointers.
Not only did they get a big 133-126 win over the Philadelphia 76ers, but they became the first pair of teammates in Mavericks history to score 40+ points in the same game.
This wasn’t the first time that both Doncic and Irving were hot shots, but it resulted in a win and that makes it incredibly important.
There were concerns about Irving when he was added to the Mavericks.
While no one doubted his abilities and his shooting prowess, some weren’t sure how he would fit alongside Doncic in Dallas.
Could the team really find success with Irving on the roster?
It is still too soon to tell just how successful this experiment will be but Thursday night’s game eased some growing worries.
The defeat of the 76ers shows that both Doncic and Irving can continue to play as they always have and get wins.
They are finding a rhythm with one another and starting to play like a reliable unit.
For example, eight of Doncic’s 12 assists were to Irving, showing that these two are starting to read each other very well.
Will this experiment continue to pay off?
The Mavericks’ next challenge will be their biggest yet as they face off against the Phoenix Suns on Sunday.
