NFL Coach of the Year Kevin O’Connell has a crucial decision looming with the Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback situation.
Fresh off his recognition at the NFL Honors for leading the Vikings to an impressive 14-3 record in 2024, O’Connell faces questions about Sam Darnold’s future with the team.
The head coach recently addressed the Darnold situation but kept his cards close to the vest.
“We’re still working through that dialogue, making the best decisions for what will ultimately be the best team we can build in 2025. Sam Darnold may or may not be a part of that, but that doesn’t take away for one second what he meant to me and this organization,” O’Connell told NBC Sports, via VikingzFanPage.

The Vikings coach didn’t hold back praising Darnold’s impact on the team.
He noted how the quarterback chose Minnesota over other suitors and steadily developed throughout the season, earning his teammates’ trust while helping guide the team to the playoffs.
Despite a disappointing ending, O’Connell emphasized that Darnold’s contributions were significant, particularly as he now emerges as one of the top quarterbacks available this offseason.
The situation has been under scrutiny as Minnesota evaluates its options.
They could secure Darnold’s services with a multiyear contract, apply the franchise tag for the 2025 season, or hand the reins to 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy.
