It is almost a certainty that Brock Purdy will be the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers this season.
However, the QB2 spot is a big question mark, as Trey Lance and Sam Darnold are fighting to earn that position.
The 49ers played their first preseason game on Sunday, and while Purdy sat out, Lance got plenty of playing time.
Lance’s performance was a mixed bag, as he completed 10 of 15 passes but got sacked four times and looked indecisive at times.
Commentator Joy Taylor isn’t exactly optimistic about San Francisco’s prospects this season, as she feels Lance hasn’t proven anything yet, and she’s not even sure Purdy is the answer as a starter, via “Speak” on FS1.

To be fair, some of Lance’s struggles on Sunday versus the Las Vegas Raiders should be placed on the Niners’ offensive line, as it was unable to contain the Raiders’ fierce pass rush.
At the same time, it was his first actual game in about 11 months after his 2022 season ended prematurely in Week 2 due to a severe ankle injury.
Lance was the No. 3 pick in the 2021 draft after the 49ers traded away a number of picks to be able to draft him, and thus there is plenty of pressure on Lance to become a good player.
Purdy took over under center in Week 13 of last season as Jimmy Garoppolo, Lance’s replacement, suffered his own season-ending injury, and Purdy played very well the rest of the way.
However, the rest of the league now has video it can use to scout Purdy, and the incoming second-year man will have to make sure no one is able to expose any real weaknesses in his game.
