The 2023 season played out a lot differently than many New York Jets fans envisioned.
Many believed the team would finally break their playoff drought now that Aaron Rodgers was their quarterback.
However, as we now know, Rodgers tore his Achilles in the team’s first game of the season, which proved to be a bad omen for the duration of the 2023 campaign.
The Jets had some ups and downs this year, but their defense wasn’t ultimately able to save several poor offensive performances.
Zach Wilson got another opportunity to show the organization that he could be their franchise QB, but, unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like that will be the case.
According to Ari Meirov, Jets owner Woody Johnson said, “We need a backup quarterback. We didn’t have one last year.”
If there was any doubt, Zach Wilson will more than likely not be back with the #Jets next season. The team is expected to try to trade him. https://t.co/D3QnbTUDuz

Assuming Rodgers comes back fully healthy next year, one can only assume Johnson is talking about Wilson, a likely indication that the team will move on from him.
Meirov speculated that the Jets might try to trade Wilson, hoping to find a willing partner to take a chance on him.
The Jets did take him with a No. 2 overall draft pick, so at least at the time, they saw something in him that warranted a top-three selection.
If a team likes what they saw from Wilson, either this year or in a prior season, they could trade for him, acclimate him to their system and scheme, and hope that he develops into a starting-caliber player.
Otherwise, whether it’s on the Jets or another team, Wilson might find himself as a career journeyman.
