Outside of LeBron James back in 2003 with the Cleveland Cavaliers, no player in the NBA has had more hype and attention coming into their first season in the league than French phenom Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs.
The post-Tim Duncan era has been tough for the Spurs as the team has struggled to return to form after the departure of Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili, but the team hopes Wembanyama will be able to steer the franchise back in the right direction for many years to come.
With so much hype around Wembanyama’s arrival, everyone has been asked about this 19-year-old international superstar and what they think about him coming into the league for the 2023-24 NBA season.
Los Angeles Lakers legend Jerry West was the latest to get asked about the Spurs rookie on The Rich Eisen Show and talked about how impressed he’s been with a microphone pointed in his direction.
West has a point, as Wembanyama sounds more like a seasoned veteran when being interviewed than a first-year player.
Obviously, Wembanyama’s time as a professional overseas has helped him mature quicker than others, which will certainly bode well for him on the next level.
The only question now is whether this teenager can live up to the hype during his first season in the league and whether he’ll be able to singlehandedly help turn things around for the Spurs, who desperately need to get back on the right track after years of disappointment.
